A Level Maths is the subject where the university offer is actually won or lost. It is also the one where families discover too late that "A Level Maths" is not one course — 9709 is modular, and the combination of papers a student sits determines which degrees stay open to them.

Before we teach anything, we establish which four components the student is entered for. That single question changes the entire plan.

How Cambridge 9709 is actually structured

AS Level — two components in the same series.
Full A Level — four components.

Every full A Level candidate takes Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) and Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3), then one of two applied routes:

Route Applied components Typically suits
A Paper 4 (Mechanics) + Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1) Engineering, physics, computer science
B Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1) + Paper 6 (Probability & Statistics 2) Economics, business, medicine, psychology

Three constraints that cost students real money when they are discovered late:

  1. Paper 4 and Paper 6 cannot be combined. Paper 6 depends on Paper 5, and the routes do not mix.
  2. Paper 2 and Paper 3 cannot be taken in the same series. Paper 2 is the AS-only route; Paper 3 is the A Level route.
  3. The Pure-only AS route (Papers 1 and 2) is a dead end for the full A Level. A student on that route cannot carry the AS result forward to complete the A Level. If a university offer requires full A Level Maths, this needs catching in Year 12, not Year 13.

Paper 1 is the foundation for everything else. Paper 3 adds further calculus, differential equations, three-dimensional vectors and complex numbers — and it assumes Paper 1 is fluent, not merely passed.

Where marks are actually lost

  1. A weak Paper 1 that was never repaired. Paper 3 assumes Paper 1 content and examines it inside harder questions. A student who scraped through Pure 1 does not fail Pure 3 on new material — they fail it on old material under pressure.
  2. Multi-step Pure 3 questions. Partial fractions leading into binomial expansion, or into integration, or into a differential equation. Students who have drilled each technique separately freeze when they are chained.
  3. Mechanics treated as physics. Mechanics is examined as mathematics. Students who reason physically instead of setting up equations formally lose method marks consistently.
  4. The wrong applied route. A student who would have been stronger on Statistics entered for Mechanics, or vice versa. We raise it if the assessment shows it, while there is still time to matter.

How it works

  1. Free diagnostic — including a Pure 1 fluency check, not just current-topic performance.
  2. Component-specific plan — built around the exact four papers the student is entered for.
  3. Weekly one-to-one sessions.
  4. Timed past-paper work per component, across both the June and November series.

Pricing

12 sessions — 899 AED (74.9 AED per session).

Frequently asked questions

Which papers is my child entered for?

The school's exam officer will confirm. Send us the entry details on WhatsApp and we will tell you which route it is and what it implies.

Which applied route should we choose?

It depends on the intended degree. Engineering, physics and computer science generally favour Mechanics; economics, business, medicine and psychology generally favour the Statistics route. The school controls entry, so raise it early.

My child did well in AS and is struggling in A2. Is that normal?

Very. Paper 3 assumes fluency in Paper 1 content rather than familiarity, and it chains techniques together within single questions. The diagnostic tells us whether the problem is new material or unrepaired foundations.

Can we carry forward an AS result?

It depends on the route taken. The Pure-only AS route (Papers 1 and 2) cannot be carried forward to the full A Level. Other routes can be. This is worth confirming with the school now rather than in Year 13.

Do you cover Further Mathematics (9231)?

Contact us with the components and we will tell you honestly whether we can deliver at the level required. We would rather say no than take the booking.

Online or in person?

Online, live, one-to-one, scheduled around school and revision commitments.
