The two full A Level routes

Three rules that catch families out
- Papers 4 and 6 can't be combined. Paper 6 depends on Paper 5.
- Papers 2 and 3 can't be taken in the same series. Paper 2 belongs to the AS-only route; Paper 3 to the A Level route.
- The Pure-only AS route (Papers 1 and 2) cannot be carried forward. A student who takes it cannot use that AS result towards the full A Level. If a university offer requires full A Level Maths, this must be caught in Year 12.
Why Paper 1 matters more than it looks
Paper 1 is the foundation for everything else, and Paper 3 assumes it is fluent — not merely passed. Students who scraped through Pure 1 tend to struggle in Pure 3 not on new material, but on Paper 1 content examined inside harder, multi-step questions.

- Start from the intended degree, not from which topics feel easier today.
