In general, the IELTS test method depends on a set of questions distributed over the four basic language skills, which are reading, listening, speaking and writing, whether the IELTS is paper-based or computer-based.
Listening in IELTS paper-based or computer-based:
The duration of the IELTS listening test, whether paper-based or computer-based, is approximately 30 minutes, and there is another 10 minutes for answering the questions, i.e. 40 minutes in total.
As for the method of testing the listening section of IELTS, whether it is paper-based or computer-based, it is that you:
You will listen to four recorded texts, monologues and conversations by a range of native speakers, and write their responses to a series of questions. These include questions that test your ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information, your ability to understand the opinions and attitudes of the speakers, your ability to understand the purpose of what is being said and your ability to follow the development of ideas. A variety of native speaker voices and accents are used, and you will hear each section only once.
The IELTS listening test, whether paper-based or computer-based, consists of four parts:
- Part 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context, for example a conversation at home.
- Part Two: A monologue in an everyday social context, for example a conversation on the street.
- Part 3: A conversation between up to four people in an educational or training context, such as a university instructor and a student discussing an assignment .
- Part IV: A monologue on an academic topic, e.g. a university lecture.

IELTS writing test: paper-based or computer-based:
The IELTS writing test, whether paper-based or computer-based, consists of two parts and measures the extent to which a person can use the English language in this test for a variety of purposes and show how they can adapt to written English to suit a variety of different topics and how to use words, grammar and links, which is very useful in the assessment. This is done by writing a letter, an essay, a story or an article according to the specified questions. It lasts for a full hour.
IELTS Speaking Test:
It is the final test in the paper-based or computer-based IELTS exam .
The IELTS Speaking test is a quarter of an hour long and consists of three parts. This test is the same for both academic and general training candidates. This section of the IELTS test includes a personal interview, which will soon be via video call, covering a wide range of topics that the person must understand and answer, and talk about some personal topics. The person also engages in a short discussion on a specific topic individually, in addition to contributing to a paired discussion on some specific issues, such as your home and family, your work, your studies and your interests. This part lasts between 4 and 5 minutes per question.
In early 2022, the computer-delivered IELTS was approved, as the usual paper-based IELTS test was the well-known form, but now it is possible to take the exam completely online. We will present more details about the computer-delivered IELTS.
What is computer-based IELTS?
It is a test that measures the level of English language, but it is done via computer, so that it provides the following:
- Take IELTS on a computer for faster results and more tests available.
- Get results in 3-5 days
- Possibility of doing more tests, during more days of the week.
- The computer-delivered IELTS Speaking test remains face-to-face.
- You can choose between studying IELTS on paper or on the computer.
- The test content and structure remain the same in both paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS.
- Most importantly, the speaking test remains face-to-face with an IELTS certified examiner.
- With IELTS on computer, there are more test dates and sessions available, allowing you to choose the test time that is most convenient for you.
- IELTS on computer is taken at an official IELTS test centre.

What is the difference between computer-based IELTS and IELTS Indicator?
It is known that the IELTS test, whether paper-based or computer-based, is the approved and accepted form known to all entities that accept the IELTS test, but recently due to the Covid-19 coronavirus and the quarantine periods that are taking place in an unexpected emergency, some entities have adopted what is known as the IELTS index as an alternative to the IELTS test, whether paper-based or computer-based, during those periods.What is the alternative IELTS indicator for paper-based or computer-based IELTS?
The IELTS Indicator is a safe and simple way to demonstrate your language skills during Covid-19 quarantine periods. For example, if you are applying to an educational institution, the IELTS Indicator is the online test you can use to demonstrate your language skills safely during Covid-19 shutdowns when it is not possible to take the test at an official test centre . However, the IELTS Indicator is not accepted for some purposes, for example, it is not accepted for immigration to Australia, Canada or New Zealand.
Since we are not in a home isolation period, the IELTS indicator, which is an alternative to IELTS paper-based or computer-based, is now suspended. More details about the IELTS computer-based indicator, which is an alternative to IELTS paper-based or computer-based:
- Covers the four skills of the English language as in IELTS, paper-based or computer-based.
- The online test assesses each area of IELTS skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The Speaking test is delivered via video call with a fully qualified and trained examiner, maintaining IELTS’s focus on assessing spoken English.
- It is an official IELTS product for IELTS centres as is the case with the paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS test.
- The IELTS Indicator is a timed test that matches the structure of the in-person test. It remains reliable, fair and accurate, because it uses the standard IELTS procedures and the two official IELTS tests, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
- It gives you an indicative score, not a real measure.
- You will receive your scores within seven days - an indicative score for each section and an overall point score.
- It is not a substitute for an actual paper-based or computer-based IELTS test but is an emergency measure.
- Once testing resumes and workflows return, your university or education provider may ask you to take the IELTS test in person, even if you have taken the IELTS Indicator.
How is the IELTS test conducted as an alternative to paper-based or computer-based IELTS?
The IELTS Alternative to the paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS test is a live online test with a set start and duration time – to take it you need a suitable computer with reliable internet access. The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of the test must be completed in one sitting, with the Speaking test taken a few days before or after the other sections.
Who accepts the paper-based or computer-based IELTS alternative?
Universities and educational institutions can use the IELTS score as an alternative to paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS to assess the language ability of candidates when test takers do not have access to the actual IELTS. However, please check with your university to see if it is accepted before booking an IELTS score as an alternative to paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS.
