What does the AP exam consist of?
Advanced Placement (AP) exams are standardized exams taken by high school students to reflect their academic level in the prescribed subjects. The highest scores on the AP exams are counted as credit hours on the student’s university record. This exam, which can be taken at schools accredited by College Board as a testing center, is completely different from the curricula and examination system in the United Arab Emirates. For this reason, obtaining detailed and sufficient information from experts before preparing directly affects the success of the exam. The content of the AP exam, which is repeated every year, is prepared by a council of high school AP teachers and university professors and consists of two parts:
- In the first part, multiple choice and short answer questions are included;
- In the second part, candidates are expected to write an essay.
The duration of the exam and the number of questions vary depending on the topic chosen by the student. The exam is scored digitally and manually. As such; short-answer questions and essays are scored by certified trainers and experts, while multiple-choice questions are checked by a computer.
AP exams that require special preparation:
Some AP exams require students to record special audio or video material, which requires special equipment to produce such material. Areas that require special preparation include:
- World languages and culture,
- music theory,
- Art studio,
- AP Diploma Program Graduation Project.
What is the AP exam evaluation?
Students are evaluated on a scale of 1-5 for each subject, which they receive in total from both sections.
5: Very well qualified.
4: Well qualified.
3: Qualified.
2: Acceptable.
1: No recommendations.
A score of 3 or higher is considered a passing grade in the subject. The credits for the exam vary from university to university. The College Board website has a list of universities and the credits they offer for specific subjects and grades.
Score reports for students who have taken the AP exam more than once are prepared using a cumulative method. In other words, all scores up to the last exam a student took are included in this report. This way, students can monitor their progress in detail. Students who take the AP exam 3 times and earn at least 3 points out of 5 on each are named AP Scholar.
AP Exam Dates
The Advanced Placement (AP) exam is administered in May of each year. The exam fee for countries outside of Canada and the United States is set by the College Board at $125; however, at authorized testing centers outside of the United States, this price may vary within the institution's information. Exam results are announced in July.
Starting from the tenth grade, it is recommended to start preparing for the AP exam, which every student can take, at least one year in advance. In this way, a more systematic and success-oriented preparation process will be achieved. During this period, many educational institutions also offer a customized study program.
