University City Sharjah 2027 — What Is Actually There, and How to Choose Between Its Institutions
Most guides to studying in Sharjah either describe one university in detail or list every institution in the emirate without telling you how they differ. This page does the thing in between, which is what an applicant actually needs: what University City contains, how its institutions differ in ways that affect your application, and the two administrative steps that delay applications more often than grades do.
Which page do you need?
- You are comparing institutions in Sharjah — you are in the right place. Start with section 2.
- You have already settled on the University of Sharjah — go to its admission requirements.
- You have already settled on the American University of Sharjah — go to its admission requirements.
- You are comparing across the UAE, not within Sharjah — see Khalifa University and NYUAD.
- Your obstacle is a test score, not a choice of university — see the IELTS guide, TOEFL guide or Digital SAT guide.
1. Quick answers
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is University City one university? | No — one district containing several independent institutions |
| One admission process for all of it? | No. Each institution sets its own requirements, deadlines and language |
| Which institutions are confirmed by both references? | American University of Sharjah, University of Sharjah, Higher Colleges of Technology |
| Listed by one reference only | Al Qasimia University, Skyline University College |
| Non-teaching facilities | University hospital, dental hospital, library, police academy |
| AUS and UoS — same thing? | No. Different institutions. See section 3 |
| Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry | Health colleges sit at the University of Sharjah |
| Architecture | The AUS program holds US professional accreditation dating from 2010 |
| How many universities in Sharjah? | Depends entirely on what is being counted |
| Biggest avoidable delay | Certificate equivalency — an administrative step, not an academic one |
| Test after you are admitted | A placement test. It sets your starting level, not your admission |
2. What the district actually contains
University City is a single education district in Sharjah in which several institutions sit beside one another and share the surrounding infrastructure — housing, dining, libraries, sports facilities. The practical benefit is proximity. The practical trap is assuming proximity means a shared administration. It does not.
| Institution or facility | What it is known for | Confirmed by |
|---|---|---|
| American University of Sharjah | Private non-profit, founded 1997, instruction in English, four colleges | Both references |
| University of Sharjah | Broader institution; includes health colleges such as medicine, pharmacy and dentistry; separate colleges for men and women | Both references |
| Higher Colleges of Technology | Public institution with men's and women's campuses; applied, career-oriented programs | Both references |
| Al Qasimia University | Islamic studies and Arabic language | One reference |
| Skyline University College | Business administration, information technology, hospitality management | One reference |
| Sharjah Police Academy | A specialised route, separate from the ordinary university path | One reference |
| University hospital and university dental hospital | Where clinical training for health-college students takes place | One reference |
| Library | Shared research facility | One reference |
A figure we deliberately did not publish. One of the two references gives the area of University City as fifteen thousand square kilometres. That is not plausible — it would exceed the area of entire emirates — and is almost certainly a unit error. We found no documented alternative in the second reference, so we have left the figure out rather than repeat it. It is a useful reminder that a number printed in a well-known guide is not automatically a correct number.
3. The confusion that costs applicants weeks
Two names that sound alike belong to two institutions that differ in almost everything operationally relevant: ownership, language of instruction, college structure, admission requirements and deadlines.
| Aspect | American University of Sharjah | University of Sharjah |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Private, non-profit | Broader institution, multiple colleges |
| Founded | 1997 | Earlier |
| Instruction | English | Varies by program |
| College structure | Four: Architecture, Art and Design; Arts and Sciences; Engineering; School of Business Administration | Wider, including health colleges |
| Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry | Not offered | Offered |
| Campus organisation | One shared campus | Separate colleges for men and women |
One correction worth stating plainly. Summaries in both English and Arabic frequently credit the American University of Sharjah with five colleges by adding a college of communication. Its published structure is four colleges, and mass communication programs sit inside the College of Arts and Sciences. We published that error on our own page and have corrected it.
4. Choosing by specialisation, not by impression
Institutions cannot be usefully compared in the abstract. They can only be compared at a named specialisation.
| If your goal is… | The logical destination… | And the real obstacle is usually… |
|---|---|---|
| Medicine, pharmacy or dentistry | The health colleges at the University of Sharjah | The competitive average, which sits above the published minimum |
| Architecture | AUS, whose program holds US professional accreditation from 2010 | The portfolio — months of work, not a week |
| Engineering | Both offer it; compare at the named branch, not the college name | Mathematics and physics strength, plus the post-admission placement test |
| Business administration | Several options including a college specialising in the field | The English requirement, which is higher for graduate programs |
| Islamic studies or Arabic | An institution specialising in the field within the district | Language of instruction differing from what you assumed |
| A shorter applied route | Higher Colleges of Technology programs | Confusing the diploma requirement with the foundation-program requirement |
| Fully English-medium study | AUS | Proof of English proficiency |
Three questions settle the decision better than any ranking table: does the institution offer your exact specialisation rather than its general field; do you meet your program's requirement rather than the institutional minimum; and is the program professionally accredited in the field you intend to work in. Professional accreditation in engineering, architecture and the health fields affects later licensing and employment more than an institution's place in a ranking table does.
On rankings: they change every edition, different bodies disagree sharply about the same institution in the same year, and they measure the institution rather than your program. Any ranking claim that arrives without an edition year and a named ranking body is not information.
5. The two steps that delay applications more than grades do
Certificate equivalency. If your secondary certificate was issued outside the UAE, an equivalency is usually required among your documents. It is administrative, it has its own processing time, and no course or tutoring fixes it. Begin it early and confirm the procedure for your specific case with both the competent authority and the admissions office — not one or the other.
The placement test after admission. Many institutions require admitted bachelor's students to sit tests in English, mathematics and sometimes physics, by major. It does not decide your admission — you are already admitted when you sit it. It decides the level of coursework you begin at, and a preparatory placement can add a semester or more to your degree. Because it sets your starting level rather than your eligibility, the appropriate preparation is a review of secondary fundamentals rather than intensive coaching. A student who places one level above their real command of the material has bought a harder first semester, not a shorter degree.
And a third case worth knowing: an English score below the stated requirement is not automatically a refusal. Some institutions run a route for applicants whose score falls within a defined band beneath the direct-entry threshold, letting them raise their English before beginning the standard program. Applicants abandon applications they were eligible for because nobody mentioned it. Ask about it by name.
6. When studying in Sharjah is the wrong choice for you
- Your specialisation is not offered at any institution in the district. Proximity does not compensate for an absent program.
- You need evening or part-time study and have not verified it exists in the program you want.
- You are planning a long daily commute from a distant emirate without costing peak-hour travel across four years rather than one week.
- The English requirement is beyond reach for the coming intake and you do not want a preparatory route. Deferring a year with a plan beats a struggling start.
- Your decision rests on a ranking you heard about and you have not yet opened the institution's program list or your program's requirements.
- Your obstacle is a document, not a score — an equivalency, a transcript, a portfolio. No course completes paperwork.
7. Where preparation genuinely helps
The recurring obstacle in Sharjah applications is not the choice of institution. It is an English score below the program requirement, and an SAT result below what the application needs where your credential type calls for one. Both respond to structured work over a reasonable period.
We offer IELTS, TOEFL and Digital SAT preparation online and one-to-one, beginning with a diagnostic so the plan fits the actual gap. We do not promise a specific score — no one honestly can, and a provider who does is telling you something they cannot know.

8. Sources and how to check this yourself
The composition of the district was assembled from two independent references, and the table above marks which items both confirmed and which appeared in only one. The college structure of the American University of Sharjah was verified against the institution's own pages. The area figure given by one reference was discarded as implausible, as explained in section 2.
Requirements, deadlines and program lists change between cycles. Before acting on any figure here, confirm it on the institution's official pages or in writing from its admissions office. This page is a map, not a substitute for the source.
