IELTS in Qatar 2026 — Fees in QAR, Test Centres, Dates, and the Band Qatar University Requires | IELTS في قطر
In two lines: IELTS in Qatar costs QAR 1,460 on computer at the British Council (QAR 1,290 for IELTS Academic Online, which Qatar University does not accept), runs several times a month in Doha, and the band you need depends on the door you are knocking on: 5.5 overall exempts you from Qatar University's Foundation English, while Education City campuses and most professional licensing bodies expect considerably more. Choose the format and the target band first — then prepare.

Which IELTS, and which band, for what you want in Qatar
| Your goal | Test | What is actually required (read 4 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Qatar University — skip Foundation English | IELTS Academic (paper or computer; not Online, not One Skill Retake, not General) | 5.5 overall exempts you from Foundation Program English courses. Valid 2 years from the intended semester. QU's own closed centre charges QAR 950 and serves QU applicants/students only. |
| Education City campuses (Georgetown, Northwestern, CMU-Q, HBKU…) | IELTS Academic or TOEFL | Each campus sets its own band; expect a higher bar than QU. Check the campus page for the current cycle. |
| Work / professional licensing in Qatar | Usually IELTS Academic | Healthcare and teaching regulators publish their own minimums — confirm with the regulator, not the employer. |
| UK visa or study | IELTS for UKVI | UKVI versions cost more (below) and must be booked as UKVI from the start. |
| Migration (Canada, Australia, UK) | IELTS General Training | Check the immigration body's current band per skill. |
The single most expensive mistake in Qatar is booking IELTS Academic Online because it is QAR 170 cheaper, then discovering the university does not accept it. Qatar University states this explicitly. Book the centre-based test unless your institution confirms Online in writing.

Where and how often
IELTS in Qatar is run through the British Council and partner venues in Doha, on computer, with several sittings a month; paper-based sessions are offered on fewer dates. Computer results typically arrive in 3–5 days, paper in about 13. Qatar University runs its own closed centre for its applicants. Book 3–4 weeks ahead for peak months (May–June and August–September, when university deadlines cluster).
One Skill Retake: when it is worth QAR 920
If you missed your target in one skill only (for example 6.0 overall with Writing 5.5), you can retake that one skill within 60 days instead of the whole test. This is worth it only if the receiving institution accepts One Skill Retake results — Qatar University does not. Ask first.
A realistic preparation plan from Qatar
- Take one full timed practice test (the free official sample is enough) and score each skill separately.
- From 5.0 to 6.0: 8–10 weeks; the gap is usually grammar range and reading speed, not "tips".
- From 6.0 to 7.0: 6–8 weeks of focused work on your weakest skill — for most Arabic speakers that is Writing Task 2 structure and Speaking Part 3.
- Already at your target in three skills: prepare for the one, and plan on One Skill Retake only if your institution accepts it.
When you do not need a course
- You scored your target band on a timed official practice test.
- Your institution accepts Duolingo or TOEFL and you are stronger there.
- You need 5.5 for QU and already study in an English-medium school — a few timed practice tests may be enough.
