TOEFL exam types
The TOEFL exam is divided into three types:
- TOEFL (IBT) test : It measures the students’ four skills in the English language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), which the student takes via the Internet, or in the places and centers affiliated with the (ETS) Foundation. This type of TOEFL exam witnesses the largest number of applicants, at a rate equivalent to 97% of applicants to take the TOEFL exam in its various types worldwide.
- TOEFL (PBT) test : It is the paper-based TOEFL test, which is not very popular among students and those wishing to be certified as English language proficient, given that most applicants rely on the (IBT) test, which is conducted via computer over the Internet. The TOEFL (PBT) test is used in most countries and places that lack computers and do not have an Internet connection.
TOEFL Test (TBD) : It is the modified TOEFL test for the TOEFL Test (PBT), which is concerned with measuring the skills of (reading - writing - listening), but it does not provide a measurement of the speaking skill due to its need for the availability of many techniques to measure and analyze speech and sound outputs.

The most important differences between the TOEFL (IBT) and (PBT) exams
The TOEFL exam is unique from other exams in measuring the English language , in terms of the accuracy it achieves in measuring the level of applicants without any consideration other than their ability to acquire English language skills. However, the computer-based TOEFL exam differs from the paper-based one in several things, which are:
Exam time:
The paper-based TOEFL exam takes 3.5 hours, while the computer-based TOEFL exam takes 4.5 hours.
Exam level:
The computer-based test is more difficult than the paper-based test.
- Exam evaluation score:
The paper-based TOEFL (PBT) test is scored between 310 and 677, with scores distributed equally across the three sections, with scores ranging from 31 to 68 in each section, while in the computer-based test (IBT) questions are scored between 0 and 120, distributed equally across the four sections of the test (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), with scores ranging from 0 to 30 in each section.
Exam sections:
The computer-based TOEFL exam consists of four sections: (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), while the paper-based TOEFL exam consists of three sections: (reading, grammar, and listening), in addition to the essay writing section.
TOEFL Exam Sections
The most common TOEFL test (IBT) is divided into four main sections, each of which includes a set of questions, and the scores are divided equally among the number of questions. These four sections are represented by the skills (listening - speaking - reading - writing), and they can be detailed as follows:
The number of questions ranges between (34 - 51) questions, and the questions come in the form of recorded audio clips of conversations or discussions that the student listens to, then answers the questions related to those clips.
- Speaking section :
The number of questions is (6) questions, and the questions consist of the student giving his opinion by talking about a written topic, or an audio clip.
- Reading section :
The number of questions in it ranges between (36 - 56) questions, which are asked about 3 or 4 texts, and the reading question in the exam is formed in the form of paragraphs followed by a number of questions that the student answers.
This skill is represented in two questions in the exam. In one of them, the student is asked to write an essay in which he expresses his opinion about an audio clip or written text, and in the other, he is asked to write an essay about a specific issue or topic.
