Short answer: From the 2024 exam series, Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) no longer has Core and Extended tiers. Why it matters for families in the UAE
1. No more tier decision. Parents no longer need to worry that a Core entry has capped their child's grade before the exam.
2. Old past papers can mislead. Pre-2024 papers were written for a tiered exam. They are still useful for practising reading, writing and listening, but timing and structure practice should use the 2024 format onwards.
3. The First Language vs Second Language decision is now the big one. Cambridge First Language English (0500) is designed for students whose main language of schooling is English, and it expects the inference, analysis and formal writing of a first-language user. For many bilingual students in the UAE, the right choice between 0500 and 0510 matters more than any tier ever did.
How to prepare for the current 0510
- Use 2024-onwards papers for full timed practice.
- Practise the summary and note-taking tasks — they reward condensing in your own words, not copying.
- Write to the task. Form, audience and purpose drive the writing marks; a strong piece in the wrong register loses them.
- Build listening stamina with timed audio, not just reading practice.
