EmSAT and UAE University Admission in 2026 — What Actually Changed

Quick answer: On 3 November 2024 the UAE Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research cancelled the EmSAT requirement for Grade 12 students applying to higher education, effective immediately. No single replacement exam was introduced. Each university now sets its own criteria — weighting subject grades most heavily, running its own placement tests, and accepting international tests such as SAT, ACT, IELTS and TOEFL in many pathways.
📌 Important nuance: "Cancelled" does not mean the test no longer exists. The UAE Government's official portal still states that EmSAT "is not mandatory for grade 12 students, but is often required for admission to higher education institutions in the UAE," and that "universities can opt to use EmSAT or other approved tests for admission." Ask your target university directly before you assume either way.

What was not cancelled — and why it matters

A great deal of content online, in English and Arabic, now says the EmSAT "no longer exists." That reading is inaccurate, and acting on it can cost a student a place.

What ended was the mandate. The test itself is still described in the present tense on the UAE Government's official portal, which states:

"EmSAT is not mandatory for grade 12 students, but is often required for admission to higher education institutions in the UAE."

"Grade 12 students seeking equivalency of a general education certificate in the UAE can opt for EmSat tests."

"Universities can opt to use EmSAT or other approved tests for admission."

The practical rule: do not assume you need EmSAT, and do not assume you don't. Ask the admissions office of each university you are applying to, by name: Do you accept EmSAT? Do you require it for my intended major? What alternative do you accept instead?

What determines admission now — in order of weight

1. Your grades in the subjects tied to your major — the heaviest factor

This is the substantive change. Universities — particularly in medicine and engineering — now read individual subject grades rather than relying on the overall average alone. A student with an 88% average and 72 in Physics is now in a weaker position than one with an 84% average and 91 in Physics. Two years ago the reverse was true.

2. The university's own placement test

Many universities run their own tests in Mathematics, Physics and English. These do not "fail" anyone — they decide whether a student enters the major directly or spends a full year in a foundation programme. Full guide to university placement tests.

3. International tests — accepted, not mandated

SAT, ACT, IELTS and TOEFL carry more weight in many admission pathways than they did, and some universities accept them in place of sections of their internal test — the English section most often.

⚠️ The SAT is not the official replacement for EmSAT. It is a strong option for students targeting international and American-curriculum pathways, and some UAE universities accept it — but no ministry designated it as a substitute. Confirm with your university before booking any course, including ours.

When you probably do not need any of this

  • Your target university runs its own placement test and accepts IELTS or TOEFL. Then EmSAT is very likely irrelevant to you, and months spent on it are months wasted.
  • You intend to study outside the UAE. EmSAT is generally not relevant to overseas applications.
  • Your Grade 12 grades in your major's subjects are already strong and your university publishes an exemption score you clear. You may need no preparation at all — placement tests exempt students every year who assumed they needed help.
  • Your certificate was issued inside the UAE and needs no equivalency. The equivalency route does not apply to you.

Before paying for any preparation, find out whether your university requires the test at all. One email to an admissions office can save a semester.

What to do now — by stage

Student's situation What changes What to do now
Grade 12 — applying now EmSAT is no longer required by mandate, but individual universities may still use it Protect your grades in your major's subjects; ask each university about its placement test and whether it accepts EmSAT
Grade 10–11 There is no longer a single exam that can offset a weak year Close subject gaps early; sit an international test if your target pathway needs one
Was preparing for EmSAT The preparation is not wasted — placement tests measure the same foundations Redirect it toward your university's placement test
Seeking certificate equivalency Largely unaffected Confirm current requirements with the Ministry of Education directly

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to take the EmSAT to apply to a UAE university?

Not as a national requirement — that was cancelled on 3 November 2024 for Grade 12 applicants to higher education. However, the UAE Government's official portal states that EmSAT "is often required for admission to higher education institutions in the UAE" and that universities may opt to use it. Confirm with each university you are applying to rather than assuming.

Can I still sit the EmSAT?

According to the UAE Government's official portal, EmSAT is not mandatory for Grade 12 students but still exists, and Grade 12 students seeking equivalency of a general education certificate in the UAE can opt for it. Verify current arrangements with the Ministry of Education before registering or paying.

What officially replaced the EmSAT?

Nothing unified. Universities were given autonomy to set their own admission criteria, so requirements now differ by university and by major.

Are previous EmSAT scores still valid?

This depends on each university's policy. Contact the admissions office directly. Students who did not achieve a required score previously are no longer blocked by that national requirement.

Is the SAT harder than the EmSAT?

It is different rather than necessarily harder — the SAT emphasises analytical reasoning and pacing. Choose it because your target university accepts or requires it, not because it is described anywhere as "the replacement."

When should preparation start?

After you know two numbers from your university: which sections its placement test covers, and the score that exempts you from the foundation programme. Preparing without those two figures is guesswork.
