Arabic Numbers — How to Learn and Actually Use Them

Quick Answer: Numbers are the highest-utility vocabulary after greetings — you need them for prices, times, quantities, phone numbers and addresses, several times a day. Two things surprise learners: Arabic uses two sets of written numerals (the familiar ones and Eastern Arabic numerals, both used in the UAE), and numbers are written left to right even though text runs right to left. Spoken numbers also interact with grammatical gender in ways that catch learners out — but not in a way that stops you being understood. Start with one to twenty and the tens; that covers most of daily life.

1. Why numbers come early

Where you need them How often
Prices and paying Daily
Times and appointments Daily
Quantities when buying Daily
Phone numbers Regularly
Addresses and building numbers Regularly
Ages, dates, floors Regularly

💡 Numbers are also the easiest vocabulary to practise — they are printed on everything around you, and you can check yourself instantly. That combination of high utility and free practice is why they belong in your first month.

2. Two sets of numerals

This surprises most newcomers: the UAE uses both written systems, sometimes on the same page.

System Where you see it
Western numerals (1, 2, 3) Most signage, prices, receipts, phones
Eastern Arabic numerals Official documents, some school materials, traditional contexts, licence plates
Both together Common — bilingual documents often show both

Which should you learn?

  • For daily life: you already read the Western set — no work needed
  • For documents and school Arabic: learn the Eastern set; it takes an afternoon
  • For children in UAE schools: essential, and taught in class

💡 Ten symbols, one afternoon. This is among the cheapest additions you can make to your Arabic, and it unlocks official documents and school material immediately.

3. Direction: the thing that confuses everyone

Arabic text runs right to left. Numbers do not. They are written left to right, exactly as in English.

Element Direction
Arabic words ← Right to left
Numbers → Left to right
A sentence containing a number Text flows right to left, the number reads left to right within it
💡 Why this trips people up: when reading an Arabic sentence, your eye is moving right to left and then must reverse direction for the number before resuming. It feels strange for about a week and then stops registering entirely.

4. What to learn, in order

Priority What Why
1 One to ten The foundation for everything
2 Eleven to twenty Common in prices and times
3 Tens: twenty, thirty, forty... Covers most prices
4 Hundred, thousand Needed for AED amounts
5 How much? How many? The questions that use them
6 Half, quarter, a few Times and quantities
7 First, second, third Floors, dates, order

💡 Items one to four cover the large majority of daily use. You can transact comfortably long before you have learned ordinals or fractions.

5. The gender complication

Arabic numbers interact with grammatical gender, and the rules are genuinely unusual — including a well-known reversal that surprises learners.

What to know Practical impact
Numbers agree with the gender of the counted noun 🟠 Affects the form you use
Some numbers take the opposite gender to the noun 🔴 Counterintuitive; a known learner difficulty
The counted noun changes form with different numbers 🟠 Takes practice
Spoken dialect simplifies much of this 🟢 Relief for conversational learners
💡 Do not let this stop you using numbers. Getting the agreement wrong almost never prevents understanding — a price is a price. Learn the numbers, use them immediately, and let the agreement rules settle in over months.

💡 For school Arabic, however, number agreement is tested — so children need it explicitly, even though adults can defer it.

6. Numbers in real situations

Situation What you need
Paying How much? + numbers + hundred/thousand
Buying quantities Numbers + the item + "I want"
Taxis Building numbers, street numbers
Appointments Time + day + numbers
Phone numbers Digits said individually
Floors and lifts Ordinals

💡 Phone numbers are a useful early win: they are just digits in sequence, with no grammar attached — which makes them one of the first things you can handle confidently in Arabic.

7. Telling the time

Time combines numbers with a small set of additional words — and it is worth learning early because appointments come up constantly.

  • The hour — the core structure
  • Half past, quarter past, quarter to
  • Minutes
  • Morning, afternoon, evening, night
  • Now, later, early, late
  • "What time?" — the question itself

💡 Learn "what time?" before you learn to tell the time. Asking is more immediately useful than answering, and it gets you a response you can learn from.

8. Free daily practice

Numbers are the easiest Arabic to practise, because they surround you and self-correct.

Source How to use it
Licence plates Read aloud in traffic — Eastern numerals appear here
Prices in shops Say the number before looking at the tag
Building numbers Read them on the walk from your car
Lift floors Say the floor in Arabic each time
Receipts Read the total aloud
Clocks Say the time in Arabic whenever you check it
💡 The lift habit is the easiest to build. You press a floor button several times a day, every day. Saying the number in Arabic each time costs nothing and builds automaticity faster than any drill.

9. Common difficulties

Difficulty Fix
Reversing direction mid-sentence Practice; it stops registering within weeks
Confusing similar-looking Eastern numerals Learn the confusable ones contrastively
Gender agreement rules Defer for speech; learn explicitly for school
Understanding fast spoken prices Ask for it to be repeated — normal and fine
Large numbers Break them into hundreds and thousands
Recalling under pressure Daily low-stakes practice, not study

💡 The last row is the real one. Most learners know the numbers and freeze when a shopkeeper says a price quickly. That is a fluency problem, and it is solved by frequent small use rather than more memorisation.

10. FAQ

Do I need to learn Eastern Arabic numerals?

For daily life, not really — Western numerals dominate signage. For documents, school material and licence plates, yes, and it takes an afternoon.

Why do numbers run left to right in right-to-left text?

It is simply the convention. It feels strange for about a week and then becomes invisible.

Are number-gender rules really that hard?

They are genuinely counterintuitive, and they rarely block understanding. Defer them for speech; learn them explicitly if you need school Arabic.

Should my child learn both numeral systems?

Yes — both appear in UAE school material, and both are assessed.

How long to learn numbers to a usable level?

One to twenty plus the tens: about a week with daily practice. Fluency under pressure takes longer.

What if I cannot catch a spoken price?

Ask for it again, more slowly. This is normal, expected, and nobody minds.

How quickly can we start?

Within 24 hours of the free assessment.
