What IELTS Is

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is owned and run jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, and it measures four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — on a nine-band scale. Why IELTS Matters More in the UAE Now

Since the EmSAT was discontinued, UAE universities rely on IELTS or TOEFL as the two recognised routes for proving English proficiency. The requirement was never removed — the pathway simply narrowed to these two.

IELTS is also used well beyond university admission in the UAE: healthcare licensing (DHA, DOH), teaching licensing (KHDA), professional registration, and immigration to the UK, Canada and Australia.

Listening — 40 questions across four sections. The audio plays once only, and the sections get progressively harder:

• Section 1: an everyday social conversation — a booking or an enquiry
• Section 2: one person speaking — an announcement or a guided talk
• Section 3: an academic discussion between two to four people
• Section 4: an academic lecture — the hardest part of the section

Reading — three passages, 40 questions. Academic uses complex texts from journals and books; General Training uses texts from everyday life, work and advertisements.

Writing — two tasks. Task 1 (about 20 minutes): describe a graph, chart or process in Academic, or write a letter in General Training. Task 2 (about 40 minutes): an essay responding to a point of view, a problem or an argument.

Speaking — a live interview in three parts:

The Speaking test may be sat on the same day as the written sections or within a few days of them, depending on the centre.

Watch the per-skill minimum

Many universities require that no individual band falls below a set floor — not just the overall. An overall 6.5 with Writing at 5.5 can still be rejected or diverted to a conditional pathway. Writing is the band that most often fails Arabic-speaking candidates.

The Move to Computer-Delivered Testing

The IELTS partners have announced a full transition to computer delivery from mid-2026, following evidence of higher satisfaction among candidates who chose the computer format — driven by faster results, greater date flexibility, and access to One Skill Retake.

One Skill Retake

This feature lets you retake a single section rather than the whole test — and it continues under the new computer-delivered model.

Why it changes the maths

Because your overall band is an average, lifting one section from 5.5 to 7.0 raises your overall by roughly 0.4 band — potentially the difference between a conditional offer and direct entry, at a fraction of the cost and time of a full retake.

Preparation Timeline

What you cannot prepare alone

Listening and Reading respond partly to self-study. Writing and Speaking do not — you cannot see your own errors or judge whether your essay structure meets examiner criteria. Together they are half your score.

Section-by-section strategy

• Speaking — scored on Fluency, Lexical Resource, Grammar and Pronunciation, weighted equally. Never give one-word answers; use natural thinking phrases rather than silence.
• Writing — Task 2 carries two thirds of the Writing score. Plan before you write. Task 2 has a 250-word minimum, but structure matters more than length.
• Reading — read the questions before the passage, then skim and scan. The standard trap is True/False/Not Given: "Not Given" means the information is absent, not that it is wrong.
• Listening — the audio plays once. Read ahead before each section begins, and check spelling before submitting, because misspellings cost marks.

The mistakes that cost most marks

• Memorised, unnatural Writing responses — examiners recognise them and they score poorly on Lexical Resource
• Poor time management in Reading and Writing, leaving Task 2 unfinished
• Answering off-topic in Writing Task 2 — a strong essay on the wrong question still scores badly
• Limited vocabulary, repeating the same words instead of paraphrasing
• Never practising Speaking out loud before test day
• Misspelling answers in Listening — a correct answer spelled wrongly earns nothing
