IGCSE Chemistry Tutoring in the UAE — Cambridge 0620 and Edexcel 4CH1

The two specifications

Cambridge 0620 — three papers: multiple choice, theory, and a practical component.

Tier Papers
Core Paper 1 (multiple choice) + Paper 3 (theory) + Paper 5 or 6
Extended Paper 2 (multiple choice) + Paper 4 (theory) + Paper 5 or 6

Paper 5 is a hands-on practical test; Paper 6 is the written alternative to practical. The Core tier caps at grade C. 0971 is the same qualification reported on the 9–1 scale.

Edexcel 4CH1 — two papers, no tiers, graded 9–1:

  • Paper 1 — 2 hours, 110 marks, about 61% of the qualification
  • Paper 2 — 1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, about 39%, covering the full specification including content Paper 1 does not examine

A periodic table is provided. There is no separate practical exam — practical skills are tested through questions inside the written papers.

Where marks are actually lost

  1. The mole. A concept that a great deal of IGCSE Chemistry difficulty traces back to. If it isn't secure, every calculation topic after it is shaky.
  2. Balancing and writing equations. Students who memorise equations rather than constructing them fail the moment a question uses an unfamiliar reaction.
  3. Practical questions. Describing a method, identifying a variable, explaining an error. Whether it's Paper 6 or questions embedded in 4CH1 papers, it's a separate skill that classroom time rarely covers properly.

Does Edexcel 4CH1 have Foundation and Higher tiers?
