Short answer: Pearson Edexcel runs regional versions of its International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) papers, marked with an "R". Students in the UAE usually sit 1HR and 2HR at Higher tier (or 1FR and 2FR at Foundation) instead of the UK versions. The R papers cover the same content at the same standard, but they are different papers — and Pearson publishes separate grade boundaries for them.

How 4MA1 is structured

Detail
Papers Two written papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2)
Length 2 hours each
Marks 100 each, 200 in total
Tiers Foundation or Higher
Calculator Allowed in both papers
Grades 9–1

What the "R" means

Pearson uses regional variants of the papers for candidates in certain countries, and the United Arab Emirates is one of them. So a UAE student entered for Higher tier typically sits:

  • Paper 1HR instead of 1H
  • Paper 2HR instead of 2H

The content, difficulty and standard are the same. Any 4MA1 past paper — R or not — is useful practice.

Separate grade boundaries

Because they are different papers, Pearson sets grade boundaries for the R papers separately. In the June 2025 series, for example, the Higher-tier boundaries for the R papers were slightly different from those for the UK papers. When estimating a grade from a mock, use the boundaries for the papers the student actually sat.

How 4MA1 differs from Cambridge 0580

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) introduced a non-calculator paper from 2025. Edexcel 4MA1 did not — a calculator is still allowed in both 4MA1 papers. Check which qualification your child's school uses before choosing revision material.

Frequently asked questions

Are the R papers harder or easier?

Neither. They cover the same content at the same standard.

Can my child practise with UK 4MA1 papers?

Yes. Content and style are the same; just use the right grade boundaries when estimating a grade.

Is there a non-calculator paper in Edexcel IGCSE Maths?

No. A calculator is allowed in both 4MA1 papers.

How do I know which papers my child will sit?

The school's exams officer can confirm the entry codes.
