Before you read — which thing are you actually looking for?

  • Applying as a new student — you are in the right place. Requirements start at section 2.
  • Already enrolled and looking for the student portal, the course system, the academic calendar, the library or a staff vacancy — those are services on the university's own site, not here. This page will not help you log in.
  • You mean the Emirates Canadian University College in Umm Al Quwain — a different institution in a different emirate, with its own requirements. Do not apply one's rules to the other.
  • You mean studying in Canada itself — a different route with a study permit and usually higher language thresholds. Nothing on this page transfers. Start from the UAE admission guide and compare properly.

Canadian University Dubai Admission Requirements 2026 — What the Official Rules Actually Say

Canadian University Dubai is a private university founded in 2006, teaching in English on a Canadian curriculum model. Most guides to it — including an earlier version of this page — publish an English threshold higher than the real one, and omit two conditions applicants only discover after they are admitted: a compulsory maths placement test and a credit-hour cap on conditional admission. This page corrects the first and explains the second.

1. Quick answers

Question Short answer
General English requirement IELTS Academic 5.0 — not 5.5
Creative Industries English requirement IELTS 5.5 — higher than every other programme
TOEFL iBT 61 (old scale) · 2.5 (scale from 21 Jan 2026) · ITP 500
English exemptions Yes — including at least 80% in the English subject on UAE curricula, or evidence of English-medium instruction
School leaving certificate Secondary certificate with a pass in all subjects, or equivalency for a non-UAE certificate (minimum 12 years of schooling)
Maths test? Yes — placement test for all admitted students, with listed exemptions
Conditional admission Available, capped at 12 credit hours until the English requirement is met
Schools Six — including Communication, Creative Industries, Psychology and Public Health
Campus City Walk, Al Wasl, Dubai
Fees and rankings Not copied from any article — read fees from the university's fees page and a ranking from the ranking body itself

Figures above were read from the university's published requirements page and cross-checked against an independent education reference; the two agreed on the English thresholds and on the new TOEFL scale. Admission rules are revised annually — verify on the official admissions page before acting on them.

2. Correction on the record — the English requirement is 5.0, not 5.5

Category IELTS Academic TOEFL iBT (old scale) TOEFL iBT (from 21 Jan 2026) TOEFL ITP
Most programmes 5.0 61 2.5 500
Creative Industries 5.5 71 3.5 530

Why half a band matters: it is weeks of preparation, and it can be the difference between direct and conditional admission. An applicant who believed the threshold was 5.5 may delay applying by a full intake for no reason.

And the detail everyone drops: the published rules state that certain test formats are not accepted — including home-edition and visa-purpose versions. The score alone is not enough; the format you sat counts too. Confirm the accepted format before you pay a test fee, because a valid score in the wrong format is money spent twice.

→ If you are still choosing between tests, the conversion table in our Duolingo, IELTS and TOEFL score conversion guide shortens the comparison.

3. The school certificate — and what "pass in all subjects" leaves out

For UAE certificate holders the published rule is a secondary certificate with a pass in all subjects. For a certificate issued outside the UAE: meeting equivalency requirements, including a minimum of 12 years of schooling.

Note what the rule does not say. There is no published minimum GPA expressed as "2.0 out of 4.0" and no "60–65%" threshold — both appeared in an earlier version of this page and neither is in the official requirements. What actually raises the bar is the programme, not the university:

Programme What is required beyond the certificate
Engineering Minimum grades in Mathematics, Physics and Science that vary by school system — the published range sits around 70–80%
Creative Industries The higher English threshold (5.5), and a portfolio depending on the programme
Other programmes Certificate + English requirement + maths placement test

4. The maths placement test — the requirement nobody mentions

The published rules state that all admitted students sit a maths placement test. It is not an admission filter; it is a routing test. The result decides whether you start with a foundation maths course before your programme courses — which can add a term to your degree.

Published exemptions:

  • Students on certain programmes — among them Communication, Psychology and Creative Industries.
  • UAE certificate holders with a Maths score of at least 70%.
  • A SAT Math section score of at least 450.

The practical point: 450 on SAT Math is not a competitive score by selective-admissions standards, but here it exempts you from an entire foundation course. If you are sitting the SAT anyway for any other reason, its effect does not stop at the admission decision. Structure of the digital test is in our guide to whether UAE universities require the SAT.

5. Conditional admission — and the credit-hour cap

Conditional admission covers applicants who have not met the English requirement, have not cleared the maths placement test, or have not met a programme-specific requirement.

The condition the summaries omit: a conditionally admitted student is limited in credit hours until the English requirement is fulfilled, and the published figure is 12 credit hours.

Plainly: conditional admission is not "full admission with a grace period". It is a term at less than a full load. It can push your graduation back by a term or more, and it raises your cost per credit. If you can lift your English score before applying, that is cheaper and faster than entering conditionally — and it is a decision to make with arithmetic, not optimism.

6. Programmes — all six schools

CUD organises its programmes into six schools. That is wider than the earlier version of this page showed, which listed seven programmes and omitted Communication, Creative Industries, Psychology and Public Health entirely:

School Departments or programme areas
Architecture and Interior Design Architecture · Interior Design
Communication Digital Media and Journalism · Advertising and Integrated Marketing · Public Relations
Creative Industries Creative programmes — with the higher English threshold
Engineering, Applied Science and Technology Computer Engineering and Computational Sciences · Electrical Engineering
Management Undergraduate and graduate programmes
Health Sciences, Digital Innovation and Sustainability Psychology · Public Health · Environmental Innovation and Sustainability

Programme lists inside each school change as programmes are added and retired. Read the current list on the school's own page before you commit to a choice.

7. Graduate study and the MBA

  • The base qualification is a bachelor's degree, not a school certificate — with equivalency if it was issued outside the UAE.
  • Graduate English requirements are usually higher than undergraduate ones. Do not assume 5.0 carries over.
  • Work experience factors into the assessment for some management programmes.

Exact thresholds are published per programme, and we found no single official summary covering them all — so we are not giving you a number we could not verify against two sources.

8. Is the degree recognised? — a straight answer

Context What governs it
Inside the UAE The university is licensed to operate here and its programmes are locally accredited — this is what UAE employers and institutions assess
Further study in another country The receiving university decides, and each has its own recognition policy
A regulated profession (engineering · health · teaching) The professional regulator in that country decides — not the awarding university, and not any website

The working rule: stop asking "is the degree recognised?" and ask "does this specific body recognise this specific programme?" — and get the answer from them in writing before you enrol. Any site that guarantees you blanket recognition in a given country is speaking for a decision it does not control.

To be explicit: this section rests on no partnership or endorsement claim of ours, and we hold no document on the policies of bodies outside the UAE — which is exactly why we are pointing you at the body that decides.

9. Fees, rankings and campus — what we will not copy for you

  • Fees vary by programme and by credit hours per term and are revised yearly. Any figure in an article is either out of date or taken from one programme and generalised. Read them from the official fees page, and ask specifically about non-tuition items: application, registration, and materials fees on design programmes.
  • Rankings measure different things with different weights. A single number with no ranking body and no year attached tells you nothing. Read it from the ranking body directly.
  • Campus: City Walk, in the Al Wasl area of Dubai — central to the city rather than a suburban campus. That is a commute calculation, not a brochure detail.

10. When CUD is not the right choice for you

  • Your goal is finishing your degree in Canada specifically and you have not confirmed in writing how your intended Canadian university treats your programme. Settle that before enrolling, not after.
  • You want a regulated profession in a particular country and have not asked that regulator about this specific programme.
  • Your field is not offered — medicine, pharmacy and law are not among these schools. Do not apply to a similarly named programme and assume it is what you wanted.
  • Your budget cannot absorb a foundation term and your current English or maths level makes one likely. Lift the score first, then apply.
  • You are shopping for the lowest language threshold in the country purely because it is lowest. A low threshold means you will be studying in English at that level — not that the study will be easier. The difficulty moves from admission to your first term.
  • You have not visited the campus or spoken to a current student — the two cheapest steps in the whole decision.

11. Where we actually help — and where we do not

We do not grant admission, broker it, or have any part in the university's decision. We do one specific thing: raise the test score your file is stuck on — English where the barrier is language, or SAT Math where exemption from a foundation term is the goal.

Before that, read section 10 again. If you do not need preparation, do not buy preparation.
